Upon entrance, we were teleported to a bustling dining space. Fun colors, loud chatter, aromatic scents - the expectations were beginning to rise. For food, we ordered an experimental appetizer of the Raw Fermented Crab (4.5/5). I like sashimi so I went in with an open mind and was beyond pleased. It had the perfect level of acidity, spice, sweetness and the classic Thai flavors that kept me going in for more. They also give you gloves and wet towelettes to enjoy the messy experience without the actual mess. Then, confused between the Stir Fried Pork and Chicken Khao Soi, we settled for the latter and packed the former to go. The Chicken Khao Soi was a 5/5. The best I've ever had. So flavorful that any word to describe it would be an understatement. The chicken was cooked to perfection, and don't get me started on the noodles. The crispy noodles were as expected but the cooked noodles too, just perfection! Not mushy or overdone as it typically gets at other places when it's been cooked far too long or has been sitting in a hot, soupy situation for a long time. Brilliant execution! Since we couldn't not get Mango Sticky Rice to end with, we took the Stir Fried Pork (5/5) to go, and the had it the next day. This too blew my mind out of the park. The pork was cooked perfectly. It held on, but upon being bit into, it fell right off the bone. Not over or under-done at all, and the stir fried bits of seasoning around it, elevated what was already so delicious. Concluded the dine-in meal Mango Sticky Rice (4/5). The presentation was different to how I have traditionally had it, but the taste was good. I did feel like the mango was slightly overripe and mushy, missing the classic Thai mango appeal. Nonetheless, they were tasty, sweet segments of mango that laid beside the mound of sticky rice. I have had better but this was still an enjoyable cap to the meal. I cannot wait to tell my friends about this place and return with a larger group because of how expansive their menu is. I want to try so many more things that Sappe has to offer!
Big fan of Soothr and was excited to try their new spot. Made a reservation for a party of 4 and had a decent meal here, though nothing was really mindblowing, and the dessert we had ensured I will not be back. More on that in a bit. The drinks: + Somsri cocktail - decent, love a frozen + Thai tea slushie - good but definitely did not need boba I also had a sip of a few other cocktails which were all solid except for that one teal drink - it tasted like mint mouthwash. The food: + Khao soi gai yang - decent, but the Khao soi at Soothr is way better + Mama e-La - highlight #1, get this + Fruit salad kapi - food + Skewers - chicken skin (highlight #2, get this), belly (great), okra (fine), mushroom (bad) + Laab ped udon - excellent. And spicy! + Moo gratiam over rice - fine + Gluay ping dessert - sooo bad. The banana tasted like a raw potato. I could not believe how bad this was. Other reviews confirm this dessert is not it, and they should remove it from the menu. Only one dish was truly amazing, so I will not be back. Just go to Soothr! 3.5 stars.
Heard a lof of great things about this new restaurant which is a sister restaurant of Soothr. Soothr is our absolute fav restaurant so we were excited to learn about this place. Menu focuses on the northern region of Thailand. Most of the items on the menu were new to me, not your typical Thai restaurant menu. Started w drinks, thai tea slush was perfect for a humid hot summer day and A-Liu which was a bit sour, tart and citrusy. We started our meal with skewers: okra(5/5) mushroom (5/5), shrimp (3/5 hard to take the meat off the shell and not too much flavor), pork (4/5 great flavor but a bit tough), chicken (4/5 great flavor but a bit dry) Wing Zaab (Chicken wings) (5/5) fried to perfection and dry rub was sooo yummy. Crying tiger (4.5) perfectly cooked midium rare and flavor was good. My only complaint was thr size. Tom yum tiger prawn (4.5/5) wonderful tom yum flavor but the portion size was a bit too overpowering. Mama e-la (3.5/5). Ordered it bc the server said this is similar to pad thai. It was nothing like pad thai. The noodle was flavorful but the beef surprisingly didnt have much flavor and not as tender. Didnt enjoy this dish as much. Khao soi (5/5) curry was wonderfully flavored and noodles absorbed the sauce really well. The pickled raddish was wonderful flavor contrast to the rich creamy curry and tender chicken. Def my fav of the night. Overall, i think i liked the street style casual vibe and cool atmosphere and service. Food wise, i def prefer Soothr.
I came here with a group of 4 on a Saturday night. The service here was superb! The dishes here were really delicious too. Drinks are unique and worth trying as well. Highly recommend!
Honestly, after being disappointed at Soothr, I had pretty low expectations for Sappe lol. But my experience was great, Sappe lives up to the hype and surpasses Soothr for sure! We definitely over ordered for a group of 3 girls but we got to try a little bit of everything. For starters: 2 skewers each- which were grilled nicely, the chicken and pork were tender. Papaya salad- pretty spicy but bursting with flavors. Ground chicken skewer- I would pass on this next time. For entrees: Crying Tiger- tender steak, paired with a really good sauce! Loved. Tom Yum Prawn Hotpot- Such good tom yum soup!! This tasted so authentic, just like the ones I've had in Thailand; I've never had a more authentic tom yum in NYC. Prawns were huge too. Cha Mama Koong- stir-fried dry noodles with lots of wok-hei. Very garlicky but also flavorful. Khao Jii- grilled block of sticky rice. This was interesting, a hint of sweetness and the sticky rice paired well with the burst of flavors from literally every dish. Overall Sappe was a very authentic Thai experience and I recommend!
The best way to think of Sappe is as bar food done right. The drinks are the star. The food, although done well, is really just the supporting cast. We had the Wings Zaab, Sai Ua, Zaab Hang, and the Fruit Kapi for dessert. The Sai Ua was the stand out (apparently made in house). The Hang featured the same Sappe powder as the wings, which made both dishes feel like a one trick pony. Overall spice was a 4 - 6 but without much depth to the flavors or marinade. The drinks were excellent. And the staff was entertaining and attentive. Food appeared astonishingly quick. Bring friends. Down some themed cocktails. And snack away.
